Screen Size

The diagonal and resolution of the screen affect not only its appearance but also ergonomics. Communicating on WhatsApp, working with Google Docs, playing at the best casino with no risks, and watching YouTube is more convenient on a larger screen. There are fewer models with a diagonal of up to 5 inches on sale.

The most common smartphones are with a screen of 5.5 to 6.4 inches. Models with better characteristics often have a diagonal of 6.5 inches. At the same time, most modern phones have frameless screens.

The resolution determines the clarity of the picture on the screen. The most common are:

  • HD+ (in most budget models) – 1440×720 pixels.
  • Full HD+ (in mid-range and premium smartphones) – 2160×1080 pixels.
  • QHD+ and 4K (in some premium models) – 2880×1440 and 3820×2160 pixels, respectively.

At first glance, there is not much difference in the image, but it’s better to choose a model with Full HD+. A picture only in HD today looks “washed out”, and the difference between Full HD+ and QHD+/4K isn’t as big as manufacturers claim.

Display

The quality of the picture on the display depends on the type of matrix used. Today you can find on-sale models with matrices made by IPS, TN, and AMOLED technology.

IPS

IPS matrix is characterized by high-quality colors, wide viewing angles, fast response time, reasonable price, and long service life. Optimal for working with photos and surfing the Internet.

However, more manufacturers are abandoning IPS in favor of newer and more advanced technologies. But IPS smartphones are still easy to find among budget and mid-priced models.

TN

TN technology is the predecessor of IPS. The main advantages are cheapness, low power consumption, excellent brightness, and speed of response.

The main disadvantages are faint colors, low contrast, small viewing angles. In addition, displays with a TN-matrix over time often have dead pixels. If possible, it is better to refrain from buying a smartphone with this type of matrix.

AMOLED

AMOLED is an industry-standard and a reasonable compromise between price and quality. The essence of the technology lies in organic diodes, thanks to which AMOLED displays render a bright and contrasting picture at relatively low power consumption.

However, AMOLED has disadvantages. These are high price, noticeable flickering at low brightness (some budget models), backlighting in direct sunlight, and inaccurate color rendering. However, there are new modifications of AMOLED (Super AMOLED, Super AMOLED+, Dynamic AMOLED), where these drawbacks were eliminated.

RAM

The speed of your smartphone depends on the amount of its RAM. The more of it, the lower the probability that the operating system and apps will slow down.

However, you shouldn’t be guided by the amount of RAM. Manufacturers select the optimal values depending on other components of a particular model: CPU, graphics chip, camera, etc.

Built-in Memory

Built-in memory is required for data storage and installation of various applications. It can be small in size, but when there is a micro SD slot, increasing the storage capacity to 256 GB and above, you can buy such a gadget.

Main Camera

Modern smartphones are more often produced with several cameras. For example, the presence of a front camera allows you to take selfies and make video calls. But the main camera is responsible for the ability to take photos and shoot video.

Optics Unit

It’s believed that the optical image stabilization system (OIS) is better than digital. It makes pictures clearer and smoother. For the first time, such blocks with lenses in smartphones appeared in 2012 and only in more expensive models, today the optical system is also available in the budget segment.
